Just a step away is Castilla y León with El Bierzo – a sea of vineyards growing the local Mencía, a red grape producing structured, silky, and elegant wines.

Great to explore together are Rueda – home of the fresh Verdejo, charming Torowith its legend of the first wine to set foot on the American shore – Tinto de Toro. Traveling along the N-122 through the Duero Valley for about 30 km introduces you to three of Spain’s most emblematic wineries, amid the sea of vineyards in Ribeira del Duero – the land of Tempranillo. How impressive it is to discover some of Spain’s best whites right next to some of its best reds.

In the northeast, you’ll find the best-known Spanish wine region, Rioja,shining on the global wine stage with its quality and prestige. The Denomination of Qualified Origin Rioja (DOCa) with roughly 65,000 hectares of vineyards is characterized by its geographic and climatic diversity, allowing a wide range of wine styles. We combine the enchanting Rioja with the picturesque small areas of Basque Txakoli, pampered by the Atlantic, and Navarrese rosé, grown amidst a glorious history.

The wine route in Catalonia invites you to explore the wines of Penedès, the heart of Cava, surrounded by castles, grand cultural heritage, and numerous examples of Romanesque and Modernist art. Catalonia is also home to Priorat – Spain’s second region to receive the highest quality classification (DOC) for classy, full-bodied reds produced on steep terroirs. Empordà, a favored region with centuries of history, guarded by the Pyrenees and caressed by the Mediterranean, produces mainly whites and rosés, harmonious and aromatic.

Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María, and Sanlúcar de Barrameda form the Sherry Triangle. Here, sherry ages in monumental winery-cathedrals, making it one of Spain’s most visited wine routes. Sherry is unlike any other wine in taste or production. The wines of Marco de Jerez are Spain’s great contribution to the world of enology. The Andalusian wine scene is complemented by the small Montilla-Moriles region, stretching into Córdoba province, and wines from the mountains of Málaga and Ronda.

The Alicante wine area is a great starting point to explore nearby Jumilla – the garden of Monastrell, much of it on ungrafted vines. In 2023, Decanter awarded this small region 5 medals. We combine these areas with La Mancha, which surprisingly or not, due to its vineyard hectares, is the largest wine region in the world. The longest eco-tourism corridor in Europe runs through this region: the Don Quixote route, from where we head to Toledo and Madrid, best known for their Tempranillo and Garnacha.
